«Don’t Stop Me / The Gun Is Good «

¿Qué podemos decir de un grupo que nació en el 89 y lleva pinchando dieciseis años? Un grupo que lo dejó allá por el 2004 y que han vuelto en el 2009, dando guerra, tal cual se fueron. Los hermanos Hartnoll son Orbital. El nombre tiene un origen curioso. La ruta del «techno-rave londinense» era a lo largo de la M25, una carretera circular de la ciudad que es allí conocida como «Orbital». Son uno de los nombres más importantes de la escena techno y acid-house británica de los 90, además de uno de los nombres más importantes de la escena electronica general, debida a su amplia y fantástica carrera.

Pues bien, tras la alegría de su regreso, anunciaron el lanzamiento de un nuevo disco. Debido a ésto comenzaron una gira, donde presentarian su reforma de «The Big Chill». Es una alegría que estén llendo de festival en festival, tocando todos sus temazos: Lush, Chime, Satan, Halycon+On+On,… Es una excusa perfecta para escucharles una y otra y otra vez.

He tenido la ocasión de verles en directo, en el Festival SOS de Murcia de éste año. Son impresionantes. El espectáculo audiovisual que consiguen, te translada en el espacio y el tiempo. Son auténticos genios creando ambientes. Recuerdo perfectamente la sensación que tenía, y el vello de mis brazos completamente erizado de la emoción, del sentimiento, y de lo sorprendente que me pareció. Ahora, tendré la ocasión de verles de nuevo en el Creamfields… lo estoy deseando.

He de decir, que estoy de acuerdo con lo que han hecho al 100%. Sus primeros discos me parecen obras de arte, mientras que «Blue», que es el último, es un poco más flojillo. ¡Pero ahora han sacado dos nuevos singles, después de seis años de «One Perfect Sunrise»!

Los nombres son «Don´t Stop Me» y «The Gun is Good». Dos temazos, muy diferentes entre sí, y sin embargo muy «Orbital». Personalmente me gusta más el primero, con ciertos toques oscuros y sonidos computarizados, que hacen un Dark Electro, muy melódico, pero de un ritmo y una fuerza asombrosos. The Gun is Good, mantiene ese sonido que consiguieron adjudicarse desde el primer single «Chime» mucho más psicodélico, y algo mucho más… que palabra puedo usar,… sideral. «Orbital: 20 años después de Chime»
En definitiva, una espera que, en mi opinión, ha merecido la pena. A ver si sacan un nuevo album manteniendo el nivel de los singles. Puede ser impresionante.

What can we say about a group borned in 1989? What can we say about those guys who have been playing music for sixteen years? They gave up in 2004, but they have returned back calling the shots as they leave. Hartnoll´s Brothers are «Orbital». The name has a singular story. The M25 road  was central to the «londoner techno-rave route», and that road is called «the orbital» because its form.  They are one of the most important names of the tecnho and acid-house british scene of the 1990s. They also are one of the most important names of all the electronic scene, because of their huge and fantastic carrer.

Well, after the happiness of their return, they announced the release of a new album. Due to this, they began a tour in wich it would be presented their «The Big Chill» remake. It´s fantastic that they go from festival to festival, playing all their big hits: Lush, Chime, Satan, Halycon+On+On,… This is a really good excuse to listen them over and over.

I had the chance of watching them in scene, at the SOS Festival in Murcia (Spain) this year. They are awsome. The audio-visual show they made, carry you by space and time. They are genius as ambient makers. I remember exactly my sensations, i remember they made my arms hair stand on end, the feeling, and surprise. Now, I have the chance to watch them again at Creamfields… I´m looking forward to it.

I have to say, I completely agree with what they made. Their first albums are works of art, but «Blue Album», their last one, is poor for me. But now, they release two new singles!! Six years after «One Perfect Sunrise»!

The new singles names are: «Don´t Stop Me» & «The Gun is Good». Two powerhouses, masterpieces, very different each other, but very «Orbital». I personally prefer the first one, with their dark and computer sounds, like a Dark Electro but very melodic and with an amazing rhythm and power. «The Gun is Good» keeps that sound that characterize them since their first single: «Chime», more psychedelic and something more,… how could i say,… sideral. «Orbital: 20 years after Chime».

In a word, a long wait that, in my oponion, it has been worthy. Let’s see if they release a new album keeping the singles quality. It could be amazing.

Quince años han pasado desde que Tom Rowlands y Ed Simons cambiaran su nombre original “The Dust Brothers” a “The Chemical Brothers”. Pioneros, junto con otros grupos como “The Prodigy”, en el género del Big Beat, los estilos que han caracterizado su obra son dan diversos como el acid house, el hip (trip) hop, el funk o la música psicodélica, y siempre, siempre, con la música electrónica como estilo fundamental. Como dije, son ya quince largos años en los que éste dúo nos ha deleitado con siete álbumes impresionantes:

Exit Planet Dust (1995); Dig Your Own Hole (1997); Surrender (1999); Come with Us (2002); Push The Button (2005); We Are The Night (2007); Further (2010)

Precisamente, éste último, Further, fue lanzado al mercado el día 7 de éste mes y, trece días más tarde, su disco se vende ya en la mayoría de países (incluido España). Ellos mismos aseguran que éste disco es un experimento que “va más allá de todos sus conceptos anteriores”, y por ello decidieron llamarle Further (“más allá”). Asimismo, creen que su música no es música experimental sin más, ya que ellos siempre han tratado de establecer un vínculo con su público, de transmitir sensaciones.

Es un álbum de sintetizador brutalista, donde la tecnología cobra importancia, a la vez que se mezcla con sonidos más o menos cotidianos o, digamos, naturales como el relincho de un caballo. Pasando desde un inicio de casi, casi, acid house, por la electrónica, el techno y la psicodelia.

“Further”, concebido como una sesión continua de casi una hora, incorpora como novedad el hecho de que cada uno de los ocho temas tendrá su propio video. No es una novedad en su estilo, ya que ellos siempre se han caracterizado por un directo audiovisual impresionante, pero en “Further” han decidido tratar de conseguir ese doble efecto (audio y video) dentro de un mismo álbum. Para ello, han contado con la colaboración de Adam Smith y Marcus Lyall quienes, aparte de haber colaborado con “The Chemical Brothers” en la puesta en escena de muchos conciertos, también han trabajado con U2, Oasis o los mismísimos Rolling Stones (Marcus participó en el “Licks” Tour en los años 2002-03). Además Adam ha colaborado en series televisivas como la nueva “Dr. Who”.

Comienza con la engañosa “Snow”, un tema lento (que a mi, personalmente, me recuerda mucho a Goldfrapp) y que poco tiene que ver con el giro radical que se va introduciendo con “Escape Velocity”. La experimentación con los sonidos se nota ya en éste primer cambio y continuará hasta el final del disco. Es el verdadero despegar  del disco, incorporando no sólo los característicos sonidos electrónicos, sino además subiendo progresivamente de tono a lo largo de sus doce minutos. Colocándote, por momentos, en puntos de euforia y donde realmente demuestran que son capaces de transmitir esas emociones que ellos demandaban.

El punto polémico del disco es “Horse Power”, para algunos el mejor tema del disco, para otros un amago de canción con tres o cuatro notas en loop que sólo servirá, dicen, para poner en “raves”. Personalmente opino que “Horse Power” tiene ese carácter cañero que hace falta en las fiestas a altas horas de la mañana, es una canción que te impulsa a bailar, es un acercamiento al estilo “rave”, en mi opinión, realmente muy acertado. A mi es que éste tipo de canciones me motivan. 😉

“K+D+B” es, creo, la única canción que mantiene un ritmo constante a lo largo de la misma. Es melódica y para mí es el punto fuerte para los amantes de ese lado psicodélico de estos característicos “hermanos”.

Para cerrar “Wonders of Deep”, una canción que, pese a ser parte de esa sesión continua, se encierra sobre si misma, creando un ámbito diferente y separado de todo lo demás. Una canción que para mí muestra, según transcurren los segundos,  una evolución del rock alternativo de Bush o de U2, para meterse de lleno en el ámbito sintetizado y electro. Una gran culminación para un gran disco.

Con muy pocas importancia en él para las vocales, “Further” se centra completamente en los sonidos, regresando a lo que siempre han sido, un grupo de música electrónica y alejándose de aquellos que les acusaban de haberse vuelto demasiado “Indies”.

En mi opinión, el disco no decepcionará a los fans. Es un experimento, sí, pero se nota claramente que no renuncian a sus sonidos eléctricos, psicodélicos y de euforia sintetizada. Para mi, simplemente, han demostrado que, con su experiencia y su genialidad, no pueden hacer nada mal. Y que realmente éste disco es, como dicen ellos, la culminación de “dos decadas de exploración psicodélica”

It´s been fifteen years since Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons changed their original name “The Dust Brothers” to “The Chemical Brothers”. Pioneers, like another groups as “The Prodigy”, in the Big Beat gender, their works´ styles had gone from acid house, hip (trip) hop, or funk to psychedelic music, and above all, electro music as the basic style.
As I said, it´s been fifteen long years in which we had been delighted by theis seven albums:

Exit Planet Dust (1995); Dig Your Own Hole (1997); Surrender (1999); Come with Us (2002); Push The Button (2005); We Are The Night (2007); Further (2010)

The last album, Further, released on 7th June, and thirteen days after, it´s being sold at most of the countries  (Spain included). Chemical Bros. themselves, assure that this album is an experiment that “goes further than all their previous concepts”, and that´s the reason why they decided to call it “Further”. They also think that their work is not only experimental music, as they always try to set up a link with their listeners, they try to transmit sensations.

Further, is a brutalist synthesizer album, where technology becomes important at the same time that it´s mixed with quotidian (let´s say natural) sounds as a horse neighing. It begins with an almost acid house style, and goes through electro, techno and psychodelia.

“Further is conceived as a continued session of near an hour. As new thing, each of the songs will have it´s own video. This is not new on them, as they have been always characterized by their awsome audio-visual lives. In “Further” they´ve tried to mix this double effect (audio and video) inside the same album. For this, they had the colaboration of Adam Smith and Marcus Lyall who, aside from his multiples “Chemical” concerts´ colaborations, had worked with U2, Oasis or Rolling Stones (Marcus patricipated on the “Licks” Tour in 2002). Adam had worked in Tv series like the new “Dr. Who”.

The album begins with the misleading “Snow”, a very slow song (that seems like Goldfrapp for me) and which is not very similar with the radical transformation that is introduced with “Escape Velociity”. Sound experimentation is now very clear in this first change, and will be continous until the album´s end. This is the real takeoff, builded in  their characteristic electro sounds, and growing up progreesively over its twelve minutes. At some points, it makes you feel euphoric, demonstrating us that they are capables of transmiting those emotions they wanted.

The polemic song is “Horse Power”, for some people it´s the best song of “Further”, for others it´s not really a song, it´s a three or four pitch loop, that only will sound on “raves”. In my opinion, “Horse Power” has this cane aspect that it´s needed on daybreak parties, it´s a dance promoting song, a rave style approach, and very correct for me. I can´t avoid loving this kind of songs 😉

“K+D+B” is, i think, the only song that conserve it´s rhythm all along it´s duration. It´s very melodic, and i think it will be the favourite song for those who loves their psychedelic side.

The album ende with “Wonders of Deep”, a song which becomes whithdrawn into itself, creating a different and separated sphere, as “Snow” did. It like to imagine some kind of music evolution from the alternative rock of Bush or U2, to the synthetic and electro kind. A great end for a great album.

Vocals are not very important in “Further” which concentrates completely on sounds. Chemical Brothers get back to what they have always be, an electro group, shutting up those voices that says they´re becoming very “indie”.

This work won´t disappoint Chemical Brothers´ fans. It´s and experiment, but without resigning to the electric, psychedelic, synthesized and euphoric sounds. They had demostrated that, with their experience and genius, they can´t fail. And they had demostrated that “Further” is, as they said, the culmination of “two psychedelic exploration decades”.
