Steve Aoki – The “Kid Millonaire”

Steve Aoki es uno de los Djs de Electro más importantes del mundo. Su sello, Dim Mak engloba a artístas de mucha importancia. Era obvio, por tanto, que teníamos que hablar sobre él; pero si queremos hablar acerca de Steve Aoki, es imposible no hablar de su familia antes.

Hiroaki Aoki, su padre, japonés nacido en Tokio, competidor de lucha libre (diplomado en la Universidad en Lucha Libre, Atletismo y kárate) y que, tras la segunda guerra Mundial emigró a Estados Unidos con su familia. Allí trabajó en NY en una compañía de perritos calientes y con el dinero que ganó fundó la cadena de restaurantes japoneses “Benhihana”, ahora una de las cadenas de restaurantes más famosas del mundo. Era por tanto, multimillonario, casado tres veces y con seis hijos, habitual en juicios por diferentes casos y personaje un tanto polémico.

No es casualidad que su visión empresaria le hiciera millonario. Entre sus hijos, los cuales la mayoría vivían de él (y viven de lo que hizo), se encuentran Devon y Steve Aoki (de diferente madre). Ahora mismo, no necesitan el dinero de su padre. La primera es una modelo bastante cotizada y actriz de reparto en películas como Sin City, 2 fast 2 furious o Dead or Alive. Steve es propietario de la empresa Dim Mak, Dim Mak Collection, es Dj, y además es diseñador de ropa para una marca para la que también diseña su hermana Devon.

Es curioso, porque Steve Aoki es un obseso de los zapatos. Tiene cientos, algunos de los cuales ha diseñado él mismo.

Centrémonos, pues, un poco más en él.

Steve Aoki nació el 30 de Noviembre de 1977 en Estados Unidos (el mismo día que yo pero 10 años antes 😛 ) del primer matrimonio de “Rocky” Aoki. Quizás fue el hecho de que éste tocara el bajo en un grupo llamado Rowdy Sounds antes de dedicarse a la lucha libre, pero el hecho es que Steve ha estado relacionado con el mundo de la música desde que era pequeño. Escuchaba música Hardcore y formaba parte de un grupo llamado “This Machine Kills”.

Tiene dos BA´s (algo asi como dos Grados de los de ahora, de la rama de Humanidades), uno en Psicología y el otro en Estudios de la mujer (no me preguntéis qué es esto, porque yo siempre he pensado en lo obvio, aunque creo que es entender el papel de la mujer en la sociedad y en la época actual, o algo así como una Psicología pero especializada en mujeres).

Antes de la época “dancera” iniciada por Daft- Punk, lo que estaba de moda en New York era el rollo Hip-Hopero. Así empezó él como Disc Jockey, bajo el nombre de “Kid Millionaire” por las letras de una canción de Andre 3000, ex miembro de Outkast, que decía algo asi como “Mama, I´m Millionaire” y supongo que el hecho de ser hijo de Rocky Aoki también influyó.

Fue un visionario, como su padre. Steve fue de los primeros que vio el empujón que años más tarde tendría el género Electro. Y ahora es uno de los DJs más importantes del estilo. Por ello, Steve Aoki siempre ha estado relacionado con el género electro-rock, incluso un poco “Indie” también, pero realmente lo que él siempre ha dicho es que pincha lo que se escucha, lo que está en los tops, siempre con un criterio y acercándolo al género al que él también ha contribuido a hacer grande.

Su sello, Dim Mak, ha ayudado a llegar al estrellato a artistas como Bloc Party, The Kills, MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots, M.I.A., Robyn… y un largo etcétera de nombres conocidos y con cuya contratación Aoki demostró de nuevo su gran visión.

Es un genio de las ventas. Es capaz de juntarse y hacer colaboraciones con quien menos te lo esperas, creando hits de la nada. Entre ellos Wiil.i.am de Black Eyed Peas, Lenny Kravitz (que estuvo saliendo con Devon) o Lady Gaga. Si alguno de los miembros de Dim Mak saca un sencillo, es cuestión de horas que hayan dado la vuelta al mundo y que los locales que se jacten de tener lo último estén tratando de conseguirlo por todos los medios.

Así como sus numerosos remixes y sus temas, sobre todo algunas colaboraciones como las que tiene con Bloody Beetroots y ahora en el grupo Rifoki con Bob rifo y de quien hablé ya en el Post de Bloody Beetroots. Pero éste no es su único “otro grupo”, sino que también forma junto a Blake Miller, Weird Science, con el que ha hecho también algunas remezclas importantes.

Steve Aoki destaca por su selección de música y su forma de mezclar a grupos tan diferentes como Peaches, Franz Ferdinand, Tiga o Crookers. Su intención es la de crear un camino. Esto lo ha intentado mediante un álbum que engloba lo que él considera música electro y su concepción de la música actual. El título “pillowface and his airplane chronicles” significa algo asi como “Cara de almohada y sus crónicas con el avión” dando a entender que es fruto de sus numerosos viajes y de conocer mucho. No hay evolución de estilo sin referencias, al menos eso dice mi profesor de proyectos.

Y os diré que Aoki es el encargado de hacer el Mixtape del I Love Techno de éste año, las canciones, las pondré en un post aparte, que eso se merece mucho más que un comentario en medio de tanta letra.

Realmente su música no puede unirse directamente con el Electro puro, las raíces del Punk, del Rock, del Hip Hop y sobretodo del Hardcore, marcan mucho sus canciones. Pero da igual que te guste el Jazz, el Indie, el Techno o el Electro, la energía que desprende Aoki y la energía que tiene el público en sus conciertos es lo que para él significa la música. Busca, al igual que Bruce Lee (uno de sus ídolos Asiatico-Americanos), la agresividad controlada, las emociones y sentimientos usados como arma en la pista de baile.

Leí por ahí algo con lo que estoy muy de acuerdo. No hace falta estar en la lista de los 100 mejores Djs para hacer saltar a 2000 personas. Y eso es algo que Steve consigue siempre. No solo por sus elecciones musicales y por sus tremendos temazos, sino también por la vitalidad que transmite. Un tipo que salta sobre el público EN TODOS sus conciertos al menos una vez, que escupe champagne, que salta sin parar, que canta con el micro,… Hay un largo etcétera de cosas que hace y que sólo puedes averiguar cuando le ves. Yo ya lo he hecho, cuatro veces, y éste jueves (11 de Noviembre, es decir hoy… en Madrid) voy por mi quinta.

If we want to talk about Steve Aoki, we should mention his family too.

Hiroaki Aoki, his father, a Japanese from Tokyo, Wrestling fighter (graduate in Wrestling, Track and field and Karate at University) and who moved to United States after de WWII with his parents. He worked in a hot dog company in New York until he could purchase stocks of a company called “Benhihana”, that is one of the most famous Restaurant Chain of the world. He was a multimillionaire, who married three times and with six children, and who has been taken several times to court because of money problems with the State (Tax evasion) and because of family sues. He was a very peculiar character.

It was not coincidence that his “business sense” made him millionaire. Between his children, who almost all lived off him (and still try to do it), there are Steve and Devon (whose mothers are not the same). They don´t need their father´s money. Devon is a very sough-after model and she has been actress in movies like Sin city, 2 fast 2 furious or Dead or Alive. Steve is the owner of Dim Mak Records and Dim Mak Collection, he is a very important DJ and he is also a clothes designer, as Devon is, for Dim Mak Collection.

It is curious because Steve Aoki is obsessed with shoes. He has hundreds of shoes, some of them designed by himself.

Let´s focus a little more on his life and work.

Steve Aoki was born in November 30th 1977 in USA (the same day as me, but ten years before 😛 ) as a result of the first Rocky Aoki´s marriage. Maybe it was the fact that his father played the bass in a group called Rowdy Sounds before he went into Wrestling, but Steve has been related with music since he was a child. He listened to Hardcore music and formed part of a group called “The Machine Kills”.

He has two BA´s, one in Psychology and the other one in Women´s Studies.

Before the “dancer age” started by Daft Punk, the Hip Hop scene what was all the rage. That´s how he started Disk Jockeying, playing Hip-Hop remixes under “Kid Millionaire” name (because of the lyrics of one of Andre 3000 songs, ex-member of Outkast and that says something like “Mama, I´m Millionaire”) and I think that the fact of being Rocky´s child also had influence.

He is a visionary as his father was. Steve was one of the first who saw the jump that electro would have some years after. And now he is one of the most important DJs in Electro Style. He has been always related as a DJ with the electro-rock genre, even a little “Indie” too. But he always says that what he really plays is “what sounds”, what is in the top lists, always taking care of a strict judgment and bringing it closer to the genre he has contributed to make important.

His company, Dim Mak Recs, had helped some artists as Bloc Party, The Kills, MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots, M.I.A., Robyn… to rise to the top. A huge number of famous people that, when he signed them, Steve has demonstrated to have that business and musical vision.

He is a seller, a commercial genius. He is capable of work and make collaborations with whoever you expected the less. Will.i.am from Black Eyed Peas, Lenny Kravitz (who was in love with Devon) or Lady Gaga are examples of this. If one of Dim Mak´s members releases a single, it´s only a matter of hours that it has go around the world and that the clubs that boast about having the last hits begin to try to get them.

He also made a lot of remixes and tracks that are amazing, above all those collaborations with Bob Rifo that finally has Warp as the result (I love it!). I had written about them yet – here -. But this is not his only “other group”, he is “Weird Science” too (with Blake Miller) and he has a lot of good remixes under this pseudonym.

Steve Aoki stands out for his music selections and the way he mixes so much different groups like Peaches, Franz Ferdinand Tiga or Crookers. His intention is to make a new way and he tried some time ago making an album that includes what he considers that Electro music is, even his conception of actual music. The title is “Pillowface and his Airplane chronicles” making us understand that it´s the fruit of his numerous travels and enough knowledge. There is not a style evolution without references; at least, this is what my projects teacher says.

I would say that Aoki is the responsible for making the Mixtape of “I Love Techno Festival 2010”. I will post the songs in the future because I think that this deserves more than two lines in this post.

His music can´t just be directly related with pure Electro style. His Punk, Rock, Hip Hop and above all, Hardcore roots, means what his songs really are. It doesn´t matter if you like Jazz, Indie, Techno or Electro, the energy that Aoki can transmit to the crowd and the response of these are so incredible that I can say that´s the meaning of music for Steve. He looks for, as Bruce Lee once did (one of his American-Asian idols) the under controlled aggressiveness and the emotions and feelings as guns shooting at the dancefloor.

I read somewhere, something that I really agree with. It´s not necessary to be in the 100 Top Djs for making two thousand people jump and scream. And this is something that he always does. Not only by the music he chooses and not only by his amazing tracks, but the vitality that he can “spread” to his public. He jumps over the crowd in all his shows, he drink and shower the people with champagne, he jumps over and over again through the scene, he shout and sing by the micro liven the clubs up… There is a huge etcetera of the things he does in the live shows that you can only know if you assist to one of his concerts. I almost did it… four times, and yesterday (November 11th 2010 in Madrid) was my fifth.

And he Surfs!!! Well… only a little 😛
